Dealing with depression

Depression is a persistent sadness that can interfere with your ability to do everyday activities. Eating breakfast, paying the bills, or taking a shower can feel exhausting. You may be eating and sleeping excessively, or finding it really hard to do either.

Recognizing the symptoms

Recognizing the symptoms of depression is the first step. How many of the following symptoms are familiar to you?

  • trouble concentrating, keeping up with regular activities
  • feeling irritable or down in the dumps
  • no appetite or excessive eating
  • insomnia or excessive sleeping
  • feeling hopeless or worthless
  • difficulties functioning at work
  • low energy or extra pains
